At the heart of every research project is a question. And in this one, the question was as complex as it was urgent: how do we make sure everyone has a voice in the future of personalised medicine?
That’s where the STRAP-led research project with Central and South Genomics NHS began. It wasn’t just about data. It was about trust, culture, history—and how communities that have often been marginalised or overlooked could take their rightful place at the table.
Lawson & Associates, together with our innovation partners at Black Ops Inc., were proud to be invited into this groundbreaking work. Our role wasn’t to lead—it was to support, elevate, and create space. And we did so through a combination of strategic design, ethical technology, and deeply collaborative delivery.
From shaping research activities and designing inclusive events, to supporting participants in capturing their thoughts through video and voice—we focused on creating a research experience that felt safe, honest, and human. For many contributors, this was the first time their voices had been heard in a conversation about genomics. That mattered.
We also developed a bespoke ethical AI solution to help gather and interpret this powerful qualitative data. It turned real-time audio into text and visuals, helping researchers and communities see emerging insights live—while remaining sensitive to the ethical and emotional weight of the content.
On the ground, it looked like community members speaking from the heart… and seeing their words immediately reflected back on a screen, sparking deeper conversations. Behind the scenes, it was a blend of AI, UX, live transcription, design thinking, and good old-fashioned human care.
Alongside STRAP and NHS Genomics, we helped bring these stories into a cohesive narrative—supporting the final report, the design of visual assets, and presentations to senior stakeholders. And most importantly, we helped ensure the insights reached those who could turn them into real action.
The result? A powerful, honest piece of work that surfaced deep community concerns around access, trust, identity, and ethics—alongside 15 clear recommendations to help NHS Genomics build more inclusive, responsive research practices.
We’re proud of the tools we built. We’re proud of the process we supported. But most of all, we’re proud of the people—participants, organisers, partners—who made this project matter.
This is what we mean when we say we build strategy with soul. When research meets respect. When data meets dignity.
